Building BETTER: Term 2 Staff Reflection & Training

As Term 2 came to a close, the team at the Bakhita School of Excellence wrapped up with a powerful three days of professional development, reflection, and connection, thanks to the continued support of our incredible BETTER Australian volunteer teaching team.

We were fortunate to host four engaging training sessions:

  • Teacher Jane delivered two insightful literacy sessions, sharing practical strategies to strengthen student reading and writing outcomes.
  • Teacher Claire presented her “5 Top Tips to Survive and Thrive as a Teacher,” encouraging self-care, creativity, and confidence in the classroom.
  • Teacher Annie led a refresher on trauma-informed behaviour management, reminding us how compassion and consistency create safe, supportive learning environments for every child.

Alongside training, the team came together for a robust reflection session, reviewing the highs and lows of Term 2 and setting goals for Term 3. Staff shared a deep sense of pride in the significant progress made—particularly among students who had been struggling academically or behaviourally. Many expressed heartfelt gratitude for the weekly mentoring and guidance provided by BETTER’s volunteer teachers, which has helped build skills, confidence, and cohesion across the team.

Several highlights stood out this term:

  • The arrival of new school uniforms, boosting student pride and a sense of unity.
  • The installation of Starlink internet, which has been truly life-changing—enabling real-time learning, global connection, and access to rich educational resources.
  • The students’ public performance to the community, proudly showcasing their learning and creativity.
  • The staff’s growing ability to collaborate effectively, while also working on personal and professional development goals.

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, the team identified several key changes moving into Term 3:

  • A revised school menu offering greater variety and nutritional value.
  • A new no-phones-during-work-hours policy, with phones now placed in a shared drawer to support focus and professionalism.
  • A weekly take-home library program, encouraging at-home reading and literacy engagement.
  • Plans to equip classrooms with computers and additional teaching materials, particularly to support literacy and maths instruction.

Following one-on-one staff meetings and thorough preparation for the term ahead, the team wrapped up the week with a well-deserved trip to Betano Beach—a chance to unwind, share a few laughs, and celebrate everything they’ve achieved together.

As always, we are learning, growing, and getting BETTER—together. Bring on Term 3!
