BETTER Timor Launches Bakhita School of Excellence on 24th of April 2023
On 24th of April BETTER Timor launched Bakhita School of Excellence. In attendance for the launch was President Dr. José Ramos-Horta and Cardinal Virgílio do Carmo da Silva SDB who travelled to the remote region of Same (Sah-may). Education has a direct impact on the country’s economic growth and will provide a pathway out of poverty for their people.
The launch brought together the community of Same and neighbouring regions, to witness the blessing of the school and share in celebrations with over three-hundred community members in attendance.
The progressively built foundation year school signifies hope for the remote region, with media outlets across the country reporting on the occasion.
President Dr. José Ramos-Horta said: “The school has been built because of the initiative of one Australian, Ornella, together with a Timorese. I have helped to mobilise this campaign to look for money in Australia to open this school with a new concept of the national curriculum and the Australian curriculum, teaching Tetum, English and Portuguese, beginning with foundation… the school will guarantee quality education in Timor-Leste, in terms of renovating the infrastructure, putting in clean water and providing school meals, thus guaranteeing students’ health and combatting malnutrition.”
